May 16th A visit to Danielsen Skole and free time

We always schedule the Norway portion of this trip around Syttende Mai (May 17th, Norway’s Independence Day) so students can see all the parades, celebrations, and traditional dress.  The problem is that schools take the day off before and after the 17th just as we do not have school around our national holidays.

We had made arrangements to visit Danielsen Skole today even though no students would be there.  Teachers were at school for workshops, and our host, Astrid Haugestad, took some time over the lunch hour to show us around the school and talk with us about their students and schools in Norway.  We ate lunch (a hearty fish and potato soup topped off with a dessert of Jello & crème) with all the teachers and met several who have been to Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls.  Danielsen has a long relationship with that high school and has exchanged teachers and students there. It was a very informative school visit.

Danielsen is a Lutheran school and there were a few artistic bible passages in the hallways.

In the afternoon some students found a Laundromat and others went sight-seeing.  Karla & I took a bus and then hiked about a mile to visit the home of Edvard Grieg, one of Norway’s most famous composers.  He wrote Morning Mood, In the Hall of the Mountain King (both melodies are familiar to just about everyone from their frequent use in movies, television, and commercials), and his Concerto #1 for Piano in A Minor is also very popular.

Hmm...
Greig's house is at Troldhaugen, which means troll hill.
