May 10th Humlehaveskolen, train to Bronderslev, & dinner at Ib's

May 10th started with a tour of Humlehaveskolen (Olav’s school) for our entire group.  May is actually a lousy time to visit all these Danish schools because they are right in the middle of their big national standardized exams and also planning for next year.  It is very kind of them to spend so much time and effort on us when they are so busy,  We visited one classroom of young students and then talked with Olav about his philosophy and  some of his experiences as a principal.
At about 2:00 we dragged our luggage onto the train for a couple hour ride to Bronderslev.  Bronderslev is a small rural town in northern Jutland (the part of Denmark that is not an Island and borders Germany).  When we arrived, we were met by Karla’s distant cousin Ib Olsen who accompanied us to our hotel and then took us to his farmhouse for a home-cooked traditional Danish meal.
Ib’s son Morten and his wife Lisebeth, his other son Jesper and his girlfriend Mia, and Ib’s friend Milena joined us for supper.  The women had the meal ready when we arrived.  It was delicious: Large beef meatballs, potatoes, onions and gravy.  Dessert was an apple crisp with whipped crème, chocolate cake and lighter cake with a caramelized top.  An excellent meal.
After supper Ib showed us slides and told us about his volunteer work helping poor families in Romania.  He collects donations and money from people around Bronderslev, then hauls it to Romania on a trailer, and gives it to the needy.  He also helps them rebuild and reroof their houses. It was a full but good day.
