Short Overview of the First Couple of Days

It was a long trip – 20 hours, 4 flights, and 3 trips each through the new “X-ray vision” security scanners – but this is a great group of students who travel well.  Leaving Minneapolis we could see the still-deflated Metrodome, but then it clouded over (under?) midway through Wisconsin, eliminating any chance to see much the rest of the way.  The flights were all smooth and students spent our layovers reading, texting, napping, and browsing airport bookstores.
Waiting in Milwaukee.
Checking in with Icelandair in Logan International in Boston.

Sleep was tough to come by on the Boeing 757 from Boston to Reykjavik and it didn’t get much better on the last leg flying into Copenhagen.  Everyone was dog-tired when we arrived at the CabInn Hotel, so we took a two hour break for showers and power naps before we went out exploring downtown Copenhagen.  There were lots of “old world” style buildings, sculptures of mythical beasts and Hans Christian Andersen, and an interesting demonstration going on in a public square.

On the way from the train station to the hotel.

Off to explore Copenhagen.
No one was sure what type of restaurant we should eat at, but everyone was hungry and very sure we should eat right away.  We stopped at a little basements café called Sari’s. We thought it might have an East Indian or Middle Eastern cuisine, but it was just standard urban fare: salads, chicken sandwiches, fish, etc.  It was very good.  We’ll try some more daring food in a couple days at Helsingor (Hamlet’s Castle on the north coast of Denmark).

Supper at Sari's.
After supper we walked through Tivoli Gardens, the oldest amusement park in the world. The consensus was to make it an early night in order to be ready for our school visit to Radmandsgades Skolen early tomorrow morning. It has been a long but good first couple of days.
