May 14th A Free Day

Free day today—fun for browsing in the little shops with Norwegian mittens and sweaters, pewter table-ware, trolls, Viking helmets, and t-shirts of all persuasions.

We noticed the high fashion here, just as we did in Denmark, though not as many women wearing M.C. Hammer-style pants.  Scarves are a global phenomenon, certainly!  Students found beautiful floral patterns so now have new long scarves, circle scarves, and triangular shaped scarves.  (I continue to theorize that all the flowing fabric and scarves found in traditional Middle Eastern clothing has inspired the current runway.)

Students went shopping, visited museums, took afternoon naps, and rode the funicular cable-car to the top of the mountain.

I asked at breakfast if anyone knew of a bookstore, and, the students did!  I adore looking at titles and books, even in languages I can’t read, but, the store had a balcony with titles in English, German, French and Spanish.  Heaven!!  A Norwegian band practiced for May 17th so, while browsing Scandinavian literature translated to English, I could hear “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”  A group of South Americans, dressed as Plains Indians, played music from the soundtrack of “The Last of the Mohicans.” (David and I remember them from last year.  Their CDs seem to sell like hotcakes.)  It was a literary and musical extravaganza here in Bergen. -Karla
